Parents often wonder when the right time is to bring their children in for their first dental visit. Following the guidelines set forth by the Canadian Dental Association, our dentists recommend that children come in for their first appointment around six months after their first tooth arrives. For most little ones, this is around the age of one-year-old.
This might seem early, but it’s never too soon to begin setting your son or daughter up for success at the dentist and protecting their precious smile.
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit
First visits are about your child acclimating to their Calgary dentist and learning to feel comfortable in the dental chair. Parents are welcome and encouraged to be in the room with their little ones, and we take the time to answer all of your questions about your child’s dental health.
We will count their teeth and begin monitoring their dental health to make recommendations for any early treatment that might benefit them. As your child grows, we will slowly incorporate teeth cleanings into their visits.
We never move forward with any procedure until your son or daughter feels completely comfortable and ready for it. Our friendly dentists and team also use a “show and tell” approach when working with children. This means we show them what we’re going to do first and the instruments we might use, and we thoroughly explain the procedure before we start.
Our goal is for your little one to feel safe and comfortable when visiting their children’s dentist in Calgary, AB.
