Avoiding Dental Decay
At Avenida Dental Centre, our preventive approach to dentistry focuses on educating patients about how to prevent common oral conditions such as dental caries (decay) and periodontal disease. While genetics can play a role in the health of teeth, how you take care of them at home and your commitment to regular professional care can empower you to improve your oral health.
Avoid sugary foods. Bacteria feed on sugar and generate an acidic environment that softens enamel. Candy and soft drinks are not the only sources of sugar. Many processed carbohydrates quickly convert to sugar and contribute to decay.
Brush teeth twice daily. When you eat, you may notice residue on the teeth that turns into a white, sticky film called plaque. When left on teeth, plaque quickly hardens into calculus (tartar), which tooth brushing alone will not remove.
Floss at least once daily. Flossing removes the plaque between teeth and just beneath the gums. Be sure to floss behind back teeth.
Fluoride varnish helps with remineralization. Our hygienists may recommend fluoride varnish to assist in decay prevention. After we paint it onto the teeth, you can maintain the results by avoiding crunchy foods for about four hours.
Sealants fill in deep grooves in the teeth. Children and adults who want additional protection against decay often opt for sealants to create a barrier on posterior (back) teeth.
Composite Tooth-Coloured Fillings
Even with diligent attention to home care and regular dental cleanings, decay sometimes develops. We strive to detect decay early when it is simpler to treat. This is one purpose of routine dental x-rays. Today’s digital technology promotes early detection through high-resolution imaging for our dentists to review.
Composite is a blend of microscopic glass particles and powder and comes in a variety of shades to match natural teeth. Once our dentists gently remove decay, they will apply the composite in layers and harden it with a curing light. Your dentist will shape and polish the final layer to fit your tooth in both fit and appearance.
Composite fillings have several benefits:
- Reduce sensitivity
- Retain natural appearance
- Conservative preparation of teeth
Dental Bonding to Repair and Reshape Teeth
Dental bonding utilizes the same composite material to fill in small chips and imperfections in teeth as a an alternative to veneers.

After two years of study at Medicine Hat College, I moved to Edmonton to begin my dental education at the University of Alberta. Upon graduation in 2011, I decided to further my dental training by entering a general practice residency offered by the University of British Columbia. This program, based in Vancouver General Hospital, provided me with the opportunity to further my dental skills, knowledge and …
