Root Canal Treatment Can Relieve Your Pain

Root Canal Treatment in Calgary, AB

When a tooth sustains infection of the tissue, incurs damage due to trauma or develops deep decay, root canal therapy can relieve symptoms and provide an alternative to tooth extraction.

Root Canal Treatment in Calgary

Root canal treatment is often rumoured to be quite painful. The symptoms of an infection can be severe, and root canal therapy is designed to relieve the pain and save the tooth.

We offer root canal treatment in our South Calgary dental office, and our dentists use the latest technology including rotary instruments, electronic apex (root tip) indicators and cleaners, which can improve overall results.

Symptoms of Root Canal Infection

Symptoms often vary between patients and may include:

  • Facial, neck or jaw swelling
  • Sharp pain when biting down
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Discolouration of teeth
  • Toothache or general local pain
  • Small drainage bump on the gums

Pain may worsen when lying down, which can make sleeping difficult. At Avenida Dental Centre, we welcome patients to contact us at the first sign of trouble, so our dentists can diagnose the problem and confirm it’s a root infection.

Diagnosing the Need for Root Canal Therapy

Often, patients come to us with painful symptoms that cannot wait. We will address the immediate concerns you have and begin treatment if you decide to proceed.

  • Problem-focused exam
  • X-rays to view root apex
  • Temperature or percussion tests

Once a definite diagnosis is achieved, your dentist will discuss the options available to you. Many patients choose to proceed with root canal treatment to save their tooth. Root canal treatment followed by the proper restoration is often less invasive and time-consuming than replacing a missing tooth because of extraction.

We will numb the tooth using a local anesthetic to reduce discomfort throughout the procedure. After making a small access point to the inside of the tooth, your dentist will remove bacteria and diseased tissue and apply medication to assist with healing.

Your dentist will then fill the canal and seal the tooth. While it is common for sensitivity to linger for a few days to a week, the body’s natural healing process will begin to resolve the infection. You can manage any residual discomfort with an anti-inflammatory medication that works for you and is approved by your doctor.

A final restoration will seal and protect the root canal tooth. Because the removal of the blood supply will cause the tooth to become brittle, a dental crown is often considered the ideal restoration to protect the tooth.

I grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. At the time it was a city of 55,000 but felt very much like a small town. After two years of study at Medicine Hat College, I moved to Edmonton to begin my dental education at the University of Alberta. Upon graduation in 2011, I decided to further my dental training by entering a general practice residency offered by the University of British Columbia. This program, based in Vancouver General Hospital, provided me with the opportunity to further my dental skills, knowledge and …
