Symptoms of Root Canal Infection

Diagnosing the Need for Root Canal Therapy
Often, patients come to us with painful symptoms that cannot wait. We will address the immediate concerns you have and begin treatment if you decide to proceed.

Once a definite diagnosis is achieved, your dentist will discuss the options available to you. Many patients choose to proceed with root canal treatment to save their tooth. Root canal treatment followed by the proper restoration is often less invasive and time-consuming than replacing a missing tooth because of extraction.

We will numb the tooth using a local anesthetic to reduce discomfort throughout the procedure. After making a small access point to the inside of the tooth, your dentist will remove bacteria and diseased tissue and apply medication to assist with healing.
Your dentist will then fill the canal and seal the tooth. While it is common for sensitivity to linger for a few days to a week, the body’s natural healing process will begin to resolve the infection. You can manage any residual discomfort with an anti-inflammatory medication that works for you and is approved by your doctor.
A final restoration will seal and protect the root canal tooth. Because the removal of the blood supply will cause the tooth to become brittle, a dental crown is often considered the ideal restoration to protect the tooth.
