Straight Teeth Are about More Than Aesthetics
Invisalign Clear Braces in South Calgary, AB
Sometimes patients seeking orthodontics would prefer to avoid traditional braces because of the impact that brackets and wires have on their appearance or diets. In our South Calgary dental office, we offer Invisalign invisible braces for our patients who prefer a more discreet alternative.
Benefits of Proper Teeth Alignment
Many people find straight teeth more attractive, but did you know that they also have a number of health benefits?
- Easier to clean and maintain
- Improved restorative outcomes
- Less risk for uneven wear and broken teeth
- Improved jaw function and comfort
- Reduced risk of decay due to overcrowding
While the aesthetics of the smile is often what brings patients through the door to inquire about orthodontic treatment, the health benefits are often what helps them decide to pursue a solution.
What Makes Invisalign Different?
The bracket and wires used in traditional orthodontics gradually move teeth by creating tension on the wire and may involve bands or attachments to guide movement. Small adjustments to the wire guide the teeth into alignment.
Rather than brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of aligner trays, each designed to move teeth closer to ideal alignment. As with traditional braces, small buttons may be attached to teeth to guide movement. These buttons, also called attachments, are tooth-coloured and will be removed at the end of treatment.
- Invisalign aligners are smooth, reducing irritation to tissue.
- You can remove Invisalign aligners to clean teeth and the trays.
- Because they are clear, Invisalign will not impact your appearance during treatment.
In some cases, traditional orthodontics may better suit a particular condition. Our dentists will discuss your expectations and provide the benefits and limitations of Invisalign in reference to your orthodontic needs.
Guidelines for Invisalign Use
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, patient compliance can vary. It is essential that you follow the directions outlined by Invisalign and your dentist for the ideal outcome and to complete treatment efficiently.
- Wear aligners for about 22 hours per day.
- Keep aligners clean with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Notify our team if you lose a set of aligners.
- Maintain regular checkup appointments.
- Remove aligners when drinking hot liquids.
- Wear each set of aligners for approximately two weeks.
- Wear retainers after you complete Invisalign.
Retainer use is an essential part of your treatment. Failure to wear a retainer can result in a condition, called orthodontic relapse, which refers to teeth drifting out of alignment.

I grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. At the time it was a city of 55,000 but felt very much like a small town. After two years of study at Medicine Hat College, I moved to Edmonton to begin my dental education at the University of Alberta. Upon graduation in 2011, I decided to further my dental training by entering a general practice residency offered by the University of British Columbia. This program, based in Vancouver General Hospital, provided me with the opportunity to further my dental skills, knowledge and …

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Invisalign is a unique treatment in that it uses clear aligners made of plastic instead of brackets and wires to straighten teeth.
The clear aligners are customized to snugly fit over your teeth and make safe, gradual movements over time. You will change to a new set of aligners every two weeks to keep your treatment progressing as planned.
Because the aligners are clear, they are hardly noticeable; and because of their snug fit, they don’t interfere with talking, smiling, or any of your other normal daily activities.
Dr. Wiedemann and Dr. Toy plan your treatment, and Invisalign creates a series of aligners that you will use to complete that treatment. Depending on your needs, most treatment plans with clear braces in South Calgary can be completed in around 12 to 18 months.
One of the primary benefits of choosing clear braces to straighten your teeth is, of course, discretion. Adults love the fact that they can straighten their teeth without anyone noticing.
Another advantage is that the aligners are removable. This means you can take them out for meals, brushing and flossing, and other significant events. Removable aligners make treatment easier, but remember that wearing your Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours per day is the best way to keep your treatment on track.

This is easily one of our most common questions about Invisalign in Calgary and one of the hardest to answer.
Our goal with Invisalign clear braces is to straighten out overcrowded, misaligned, or crooked teeth. The precise treatment time is contingent on many different factors and is different for each patient.
No Two Smiles Are the Same
Your smile is uniquely yours. Like a fingerprint, no two smiles are exactly alike. Each patient has their unique bite alignment and facial structure to consider, making the design and number of aligner trays different from other patients.
On average, Invisalign clear braces do their job within several months to a year. Some patients may have minor alignment issues that can be cleared in six months, while others might have more severe orthodontic needs that could take longer than eighteen months to treat.
Are You Interested in Invisalign?
Like many of our dental treatments, Invisalign is catered to you. Some people may need to undergo orthodontic treatment longer than others. Many patients at Avenida Dental Centre start seeing changes in just a month or two, yet others may need a little more time to see a shift.
The only way to know how long your Invisalign clear braces treatment will be is by calling our Calgary dentist at (403) 225-0990.
If your teeth are not as straight as you would like them to be, you may be a good candidate for Invisalign. If your teeth are overlapping, or if your bite is not in line, Invisalign may be a good option for you.
Invisalign Clear Aligners Vs. Metal Braces
Invisalign is an alternative to traditional metal and wire braces, and it may be an ideal therapy for patients who do not want silver detracting from their smiles.
Invisalign clear braces in Calgary, AB are discreet aligners custom-designed to fit your smile. Every few weeks, you change to the next aligner in the series until you’ve finished the entire set. As you move through aligners, your smile gradually straightens.
With Invisalign, you can remove your aligners when eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth.
Aligners are ideal for patients who have healthy teeth and gums—teeth that are healthy enough to withstand mild pressure as they move into straighter positions. Your dentist in Calgary examines your teeth and gums, takes x-rays, and talks to you about your smile goals. Together, you decide whether Invisalign is right for you.
