Children's Dentistry in South Calgary, AB

At Avenida Dental Centre, we welcome children and enjoy helping little ones develop excellent dental habits and a positive attitude regarding their dental visits. Our dentists’ approach to treatment aims to make dentistry a positive experience for kids of all ages.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

According to the Canadian Dental Association, children should have their first dental appointment six months after their first tooth erupts. This first visit gives the dentist an opportunity to ensure that your child’s teeth are developing normally, and to help them grow accustomed to being in the dental chair.

We value communication with parents, and your child’s first dental appointment is an opportunity to go over common topics and to demonstrate proper oral hygiene techniques for you to use at home.

  • Tooth brushing
  • Thumb sucking
  • Bottle use
  • Soother use
  • Nutritional information

Our dental clinicians have a particular interest in caring for kids of all ages. We customize your child’s dental care to meet their needs as they grow.

Fun for Kids at the Dentist

Our dental office is family-friendly, and we provide toys and iPads and strive to make kids’ dental visits fun and interactive.

Dental Caries (Decay) Prevention

Dental decay is one of the most common childhood diseases. At our Calgary dental clinic, we strive to prevent the development of decay by working closely with parents on behavioural modifications and home hygiene to reduce the risk of cavities. Adults should brush and floss children’s teeth until they develop the dexterity to manage the task on their own.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings provide us with an opportunity to monitor dental health.

  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks
  • Brush teeth twice daily
  • Floss daily
  • Provide bedtime bottles that contain only water

We also offer fluoride and dental sealants to further reduce the risk of caries for patients at a greater risk. One of our dentists will discuss these decay-reducing options.

Diagnosing Dental Decay

Between dental appointments, parents can look at teeth for any signs of discolouration, which can indicate the presence of tooth decay.

Detecting decay early may simplify treatment and prevent painful toothaches or infection. Once your child is ready and cooperative, dental x-rays assist in the diagnosis of dental decay.

If your child does develop a cavity, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to help anxious children relax during treatment.

Athletic Mouthguards

As your child grows, he or she may become more active and participate in sports that put teeth at risk. An athletic mouthguard is designed to prevent damage to the teeth and gums caused by a stray ball or impact with another player or a hockey stick.

General Dentist

I grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. At the time it was a city of 55,000 but felt very much like a small town. After two years of study at Medicine Hat College, I moved to Edmonton to begin my dental education at the University of Alberta. Upon graduation in 2011, I decided to further my dental training by entering a general practice residency offered by the University of British Columbia. This program, based in Vancouver General Hospital, provided me with the opportunity to further my dental skills, knowledge and …

Do you have more questions on cavities? Please contact Avenida Dental Centre to schedule your next dental appointment.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental visit by age one, or when they get their first teeth. It’s important to see the condition of these first few teeth and to give parents strategies to provide the best care possible for their children.

Importance of Baby Teeth

Baby (primary) teeth are important because they provide the blueprint for adult (permanent) teeth and preserve space as those teeth come in. Decay and premature tooth loss may cause overcrowding or misalignment of teeth. Our Avenida Dental Centre dentists are committed to working closely with parents to build a stable foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.

Children’s Dentistry

Regular dental appointments beginning at a young age also affords our dentists the opportunity to monitor growth and development. If jaws do not develop properly, we can recommend treatment with an orthodontist for interceptive orthodontics to improve jaw development with palatal expanders or other types of phase I orthodontics.

We work with each child, moving at a pace they feel comfortable with and explain their procedures in non-threatening terms to ensure their comfort throughout.

We also use these early childhood dental appointments to discuss habits such as thumb sucking, bottle use and pacifiers to avoid any complications.
